Overview
Tajikistan updated its National Development Strategy with its Vision for Climate Change to address the issues of carbon emissions, greenhouse gas emissions, and the threats to its environment, including air quality and the numerous glaciers that serve as the source of Tajikistan’s water and hydropower systems. While Tajikistan has overall low greenhouse gas emissions, the volume is rising, and the country wants to take actions to mitigate the negative effects. This includes a commitment to low-carbon-emission power production (hydro, solar, and wind), a transition to electric vehicles, and transitioning of construction and industrial technologies to efficient, low-energy, and conservational models. Tajikistan requires annual investments of at least 7% of its GDP to finance activities to combat climate change over the decade from 2020-2030. The total climate finance needs by 2030 could be over $1 billion per year.
Waste management, recycling, air pollution controls, and water treatment and purification systems are all of critical importance to Tajikistan. The country lacks the capacity to develop these systems on its own, which provides an opportunity for leading industries to enter the market during this transitional phase of Tajikistan’s development.

Trade data for Environmental Technologies
This sector of the economy is emerging, and the government does not currently maintain nor report trade data as of this writing. Based on political speeches, the National Development Strategy to 2030, and other indicators, this nevertheless will be one of the primary sectors of opportunity for the foreseeable future.
