Among other products, importing the following items is prohibited: pork meat, fat, hair, blood, guts, members, and anything extracted from it; frog meat; liquors and intoxicants of all kinds; and equipment for gambling.  See below for a longer (but not exhaustive) list of prohibited items.  With relevant approvals, these otherwise-restricted consignments can be imported.  Customs clearance is done only for goods permitted into the country.  The Somalia import regulations and the Customs and Tariff Act have a longer list of prohibited items and can be found on the Somali Bureau of Standards (SOBS) website.  A partial list of prohibited goods includes:

  • Asbestos or any items containing asbestos
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Narcotic drugs under international control
  • Plastic bags
  • Printed publications, photographs, pictures, books, and magazines which “contradict Islamic teachings, decency or morality”
  • Any new or used items containing radioactive elements
  • Radio or remote-controlled model aircraft
  • Live swine and its meat
  • Pork meat, fat, hair, blood, guts, members, and anything extracted from it
  • Frog meat
  • Recreation drugs and narcotics of all types of names and forms
  • Any wastes: industrial, pharmaceutical, chemical and their related side products
  • Foodstuffs made from animal blood
  • Equipment, machinery, and devices for gambling
  • Advertising materials for cigarettes
