Building the Future: Climate Action Executive Forum

When: February 22-24, 2023
Where: Torre Mayor in Mexico City
Cost: See below

Event Description

Sustentabilidad para México, A.C. (SUMe), Green Business Certification, Inc., and the U.S. Commercial Service Mexico are pleased to invite U.S. businesses of sustainable construction services and products to participate in the business forum: “Construyendo el Futuro, Foro Ejecutivo de Acciones Climáticas” or “Building the Future: Climate Action Executive Forum”. The event will take place on February 22-24, 2023, at Torre Mayor in Mexico City.

The forum will feature different panels related to sustainable construction topics, including current industry issues and actions needed to promote green building; highlight the importance of future LEED certifications within the sector; encourage and enhance the work of professionals in sustainable construction; and promote a continuous dialogue within the industry about decarbonization goals.

Why Mexico?

The construction sector—including building materials and specialized expertise such as sustainable building technologies and seismic stabilization—is a best prospect industry sector for Mexico. It is expected that in 2022 Mexico’s construction industry will continue recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by an improving economic outlook and public investment in priority infrastructure projects. Mexico’s USD 1.3 trillion economy makes it the second largest economy in Latin America and the 15th-largest in the world. Its infrastructure plans are an important consideration for any U.S. engineering or construction supply firm.

According to Business Monitor International (BMI), a Fitch Solutions data and analytics company, Mexico’s construction industry is expected to recover after a significant decline of 17.6 percent in 2020. BMI estimates the construction industry will grow by 6.4 percent in 2021 and 2.7 percent in 2022 as the Mexican economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, with average annual growth reaching 3.1 percent between 2023 and 2026.

Nevertheless, the impact of the construction sector in the environment has recently come under a lot of scrutiny.  According to Mexico’s National Housing Commission (CONAVI) the construction sector is currently responsible for over 40% of polluting emissions.  With 7 million new homes expected to be constructed between now and 2050, it is urgent that the country adopts more sustainable strategies in this industry.  During the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, COP27, Mexico announced its commitment to reduce emissions by 35% by 2030.  Accelerating the adoption of green building will be a key factor towards reaching this goal.
