WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) launched the updated Country of Smelt Dashboard, a digital resource for tracking aluminum imports into the United States. The updated dashboard gives a fuller backstory to U.S. aluminum imports by identifying up to two countries from which the aluminum products’ primary aluminum is sourced.

ITA’s Country of Smelt Dashboard allows domestic industry stakeholders and consumers to better understand their supply chain by tracking shifting trade patterns, including impacts from policy actions such as trade remedies or sanctions and is the result of more than three years of development in coordination with industry feedback.

The Country of Smelt Dashboard supplements ITA’s existing U.S. Aluminum Import Monitor (AIM), which aggregates and publishes detailed import data collected through Commerce’s automatic import licensing system.

“We are excited to launch an enhancement of ITA’s Aluminum Import Monitor as part of Commerce’s mission to ensure domestic supply chain resilience and support U.S. Economic competitiveness,” said Marisa Lago, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade. “With global aluminum production growing exponentially and U.S. imports increasing nearly 30% in volume terms since 2015, the data from our new Country of Smelt Dashboard provide domestic and international stakeholders, including producers, consumers and government officials, with reliable information about the global aluminum value chain in this rapidly changing industry. The Dashboard also allows users to choose and interpret the changing trends in aluminum imports affecting their specific markets, particularly import surges, transshipments and possible circumvention of trade remedies.”

ITA will host a series of public webinars on how to use and interpret data from the Country of Smelt Dashboard. To register, please visit trade.gov/aluminum.
