Quantitative import restrictions are seldom imposed except on a limited range of products for the protection of local industries or reasons of security. Seventeen percent of Malaysia’s tariff lines, principally in the construction equipment, agricultural, mineral, and motor vehicle sectors, are also subject to non-automatic import licensing designed to protect import-sensitive or strategic industries. See the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, which lists prohibited and restricted items.
