U.S. and UK businesses have deep and broad relationships that provide millions of jobs for workers in both countries. In the wake of the pandemic, those partnerships are more important than ever. Trade between the U.S. and the UK plays an essential role in the economies of both nations, and following Brexit, the drafting of a new free trade agreement has begun and both side seems eager to continue the mission of establishing a long-term free trade agreement.

UK companies of all sizes and sectors benefit from U.S. innovation, and have understood how implementing a U.S. strategy and presence significantly contributes to their global success. The numbers in brief:
- In 2020, largely due to the pandemic and uncertainties surrounding Brexit, total bilateral trade fell to $224 billion with U.S. exports in goods and services.
- The U.S. and the UK are major sources of investment in each other’s markets. UK-sourced investments totaled $446.1 billion in the United States in 2019, generating $47.7 billion in U.S. exports and supporting 1.27 million U.S. jobs. U.S.-sourced investment in the UK stands at $851.4 billion.
- $6.7 billion value in R&D spending by U.S. affiliates of majority UK-owned firms in 2018.
- The United States is renowned for innovative goods and services, high standards of quality, customer service, and sound business practices – giving U.S. exports a unique competitive edge. U.S.-based businesses are connected to 20 additional countries through free trade agreements, providing enhanced access to over 780 million consumers.
- The top 6 industry’s supported by UK FDI in the US are Business Services, Software & IT Services, Financial Services, Communications, Industrial Equipment, and Transportation.
