Thailand Healthcare Songklanagarind Hospital
The Cabinet of Thailand approved a budget of $92 million to construct the Songklanagarind Hospital in Phuket, an initiative under the Prince of Songkla University. This 300-bed specialty medical center, focusing on tertiary care, precision medicine, telemedicine, and premium healthcare services for international tourists, will enhance access to complex treatments in Phuket and the Andaman region. Scheduled for implementation between 2026 and 2029, this hospital is projected to generate $47 million a year in revenue from foreign visitors.
Thailand aims to become a global destination for medical tourism. In 2024, Thailand welcomed three million medical tourists with Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai as the most popular destinations. As of February 2025, the Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited 63 Thai medical institutes offering diverse medical treatments, ranging from organ transplants to dental and cosmetic surgery. JCI is a U.S. non-profit accreditation organization that accredits healthcare organizations and programs globally. JCI’s accreditation process certifies healthcare entities like hospitals, clinics, services, and programs, focusing on patient safety and quality of care.
The establishment of Songklanagarind Hospital Phuket and its focus on research, innovation, and sustainability presents substantial commercial opportunities for U.S. medical technologies and related services. U.S. companies specializing in medical equipment, digital health, and training programs can support the development of advanced tertiary care, precision medicine, and telemedicine services at this new facility.
