Mozambique Poultry Processing
Mozambique’s National Directorate of Livestock Development highlighted that poultry farming recorded an annual growth rate exceeding 9% in the past 10 years fueled by efforts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in addition to channeled investments by private sector. However, such growth calls for demand to improve disease control and epidemiological surveillance. The Veterinary Authority aims to establish certified slaughterhouses to reinforce safeguarding mechanisms for public health by setting standards for sanitation and hygiene, as well as packaging.
The agriculture sector stands as a national priority, as it is also a source of income to more than 70% of the population. Further, the sector holds great potential due to Mozambique’s unused arable land amounting to 36 million hectares in addition to favorable agro-ecological conditions. In 2020, the government of Mozambique launched the SUSTENTA Initiative, a program supported by the World Bank, which aims to integrate rural households into sustainable agriculture- and forest-based value chains. The total grant amount is valued at $500 million to support farmers with training and financing, while improving supporting services. Poultry stands as one of priority commodities of the SUSTENTA program.
