Mexico Used Vehicle Import Regulations

Per the current USMCA requirements, effective July 1, 2020, used vehicles must comply with treaty regulations. Mexican local governments and private vehicle associations showed concerns regarding the import of older used vehicles that might cause higher emissions, lack stricter fuel efficiency standards, and have poor mechanical conditions, which cause a decrease in sales of new cars and create difficulty in tracking and identifying older used vehicles involved in criminal or road violations. These factors and others forced the Mexican government to enact a decree with set requirements to control the import of used vehicles from the United States.

On December 28, 2023, the government of Mexico extended the decree until September 30, 2024. Individuals and companies can continue to import used vehicles under set requirements. There is preferential treatment for vehicles imported into the border zone of Mexico and certain areas of the country.
