Greece Healthcare Genomic & Genetic Technologies

Greece’s involvement in the European Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project presents a multitude of opportunities for advancing genomic research, healthcare, and innovation. By aligning with the GDI’s goals and leveraging its resources, Greece can enhance its genomic infrastructure, foster international collaborations, and drive significant progress in personalized medicine and biotech innovation. This engagement not only benefits the scientific and medical communities but also contributes to the overall economic and technological growth of Greece.

The European Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) project aims to enable access to genomic and related phenotypic and clinical data to improve research, policymaking, and healthcare across Europe.

The GDI project aims to unlock a data network of over one million genome sequences for research and clinical reference. This will create unprecedented opportunities for transnational and multi-stakeholder actions in personalized medicine for cancer, common, rare and infectious diseases as well as access to a reference genome collection representing the European population (Genome of Europe). Objectives and background:
•    To link and to provide cross-border access to genomic and related phenotypic datasets across Europe,
•    To advance understanding of genomics for more precise and faster clinical decision making, diagnostics, treatments systems, and to benefit the overall economy,
•    To align with the development under the European Health Data Space (EHDS)
•    To support the genomic data infrastructure with advanced information technology tools and capacities, such as AI, high performance computing, cloud, blockchain and trust solutions, as appropriate for enabling secure access to and distributed analysis of complex datasets,
•    To maintain awareness, acceptance and trust in the main groups of stakeholders, notably European citizens, data holders, healthcare professionals, researchers and public health authorities.

EU Funding Program:
Greece is an active participant in European Union funding programs such as Horizon Europe, which supports research and innovation in genomics and genetic technologies. These programs provide substantial funding opportunities for collaborative projects. Click for more information.

Opportunities for U.S firms:
Join Us in Greece to Propel Your Genomic and Genetic Technologies to New Heights
The United States Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration (ITA), is organizing a Genomic and Genetic Technologies Trade Mission to Greece, Türkiye, and Italy on May 19-23, 2025.

The mission is open to U.S. firms working on innovative genomic and genetic technologies.
The Mission will support U.S. companies in discovering potential business prospects, locating partners, customers, agents, and distributors in Greece, Türkiye, and Italy, as well as facilitating connections with national research institutes and genetic labs in each of these countries.

Participants will have the advantage of engaging with commercial officers and specialists from the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, who will offer valuable insights into the numerous business opportunities available in each country and provide them with direct exposure to these markets. Additionally, companies that are already conducting business within these regions will have the opportunity to strengthen their existing relationships and uncover new business potential.

Participants interested in attending the European Human Genomics Conference, taking place May 24-27, may opt to stay in Milan after the mission.
