Droughts, Floods, Fires and Earthquakes – Disaster Management in Australia and New Zealand-Recorded
The drought / flood cycle has been an unavoidable part of Australia’s extreme variable climate. Long periods of severe drought have been followed by extensive flooding. At any given time of the year, there will be parts of Australia prone to large wildfires (known as bushfires). New Zealand experiences approximately 15,000 earthquakes every year with between 150-200 large enough to be felt. Mozambique is among the most disaster prone countries in the world. So far, it experienced 46 cyclones and floods in the past 30 years. In 2019, tropical cyclones Idai and Kenneth caused severe damage in the centre and north of the country. Its heavy rains, strong winds led to flash flooding.
Nevertheless, the government showcased commitment to improve disaster preparedness by implementing notable initiatives including resilient infrastructure projects and early disaster-warning system alerts. However, the country is still vulnerable to occurrences of extreme weather events at frequent intervals.

Part II: Mozambique: Reconstruction
The Post Cyclone Idai and Kenneth Emergency Recovery and Resilience Programme (PCIREP) is designed in response to the devastation and destruction caused by these phenomena in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The programme aims to restore livelihoods, wellbeing and build resilience of the communities in the three affected countries with the emphasis of reaching the furthest behind first.
The program proposes solutions to tackle recovery and resilience processes in a medium to long-term perspective through a multi-sectoral and build-back-better approach to infrastructure reconstruction/rehabilitation, restoration of agricultural livelihoods and promotion of resilience to climate shocks, disasters, and extreme weather events.
The programme has three components, namely: (i) Enhanced agricultural productivity and resilience, (ii) Sustainable socioeconomic infrastructure and (iii) Institutional strengthening and programme management.
