Vietnam Intelligent Transportation Systems

Vietnam is witnessing substantial demand for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Vietnamese officials and industry stakeholders are increasingly favoring and implementing ITS-related transportation projects to improve traffic capacity, reduce congestion and accidents, minimize environmental pollution, and enhance driver awareness.

In March 2024, Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) sent an official document to the People’s Committees of various provinces and cities requesting their support for deployment of ITS across the country’s highway system, complying with standards, requirements and roadmap that have been outlined in the document No. 15209/BGTV-KCHT dated December 29, 2023 of the MOT. Vietnam currently has 35 expressway sections with a combined length of 2,001km in operation. The expressway system is expected to reach 3,000km by 2025 and 5,000km by 2030. While MOT has a goal of equipping all expressways with ITS, only 9 out of 35 expressway routes in Vietnam have seen ITS deployed.

Vietnam MOT also aims to establish ITS in smart urban areas in major cities and localities with high demand. Hanoi’s Department of Transport plans to complete an ITS pilot project by December 2024.

Looking to the future, the intelligent transportation system market in Vietnam is expected to grow rapidly due to government support, modernizing transportation infrastructure, technological innovation, and the rising demand for safe and convenient mobility.
