Uruguay's Green Hydrogen Sector Development Plan
The Uruguayan government launched a roadmap to develop its green hydrogen sector by the year 2040. Due to Uruguay’s location and political and economic stability, the government expects its green hydrogen project will be recognized as regional leader in the sector. The intent in this program is to develop a new industry for Uruguay’s economy, comparable to its current livestock and cellulose production.
Green hydrogen production is the second phase of Uruguay’s plan to decarbonization its energy matrix. This phase targets the transportation and logistics sectors, which currently generate 62% of emissions. Green hydrogen production also aims to make the agriculture sector more sustainable with green ammonia and renewable methanol-based carbon-neutral fertilizers. In terms of end-users, European countries have expressed interest in becoming future consumers of Uruguay’s green hydrogen products.
The government of Uruguay issued calls for ten separate hydrogen pilot project proposals to develop the sector. Revenue estimates for Uruguay’s hydrogen projects are expected to be $200 million by 2030 and $750 million by 2040.
