United Kingdom Electronic Travel Authorization needed for U.S. citizen travel to UK
Starting January 8, 2025, U.S. citizens traveling to the United Kingdom for short visits, tourism, or business, including those just passing through UK airports, will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) if they do not have a UK visa or legal residency in the UK or the Republic of Ireland. This requirement applies to all parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland and British Overseas Territories. The ETA is similar to the U.S. ESTA system and acts as a pre-clearance for travel. This change is part of the UK’s move towards a digital border system.
The ETS could take up to three working days to process, and the cost will be approximately $12.75. It will be required for travelers of all ages and is valid for two years. The ETA requirement is waived for those who already have a visa, an exempt vignette, or a British or Irish passport.
This new rule could take travelers by surprise; U.S. companies operating travel services and tourism-related service sectors may wish to take note and ensure their customer base is well-informed. Similarly, companies sending their employees to the UK for business development or other business-related purposes will also need to take note of the new requirement.
