Health Information Technology Europe United Kingdom Exports Export Potential Trade Opportunities

United Kingdom Digital Healthcare

The UK digital health sector was worth $2 billion in 2019. The publicly funded National Health Service (NHS) is one of the world leaders in primary care EHR systems and digital health infrastructure. It’s currently working towards full digital maturity within the secondary care sector with the aim of creating a national patient and care records system that’s fully digital and interoperable.

There is demand for innovative technology that can improve clinical outcomes and patient experience. Examples of best prospects include clinical efficiency tools; apps and wearable technology; health analytics (data analytics, machine learning); remote consultation and monitoring devices; and assistive technology.

An in-depth understanding of the respective industry segment and requirements to sell in the UK (e.g. demand, competition, potential barriers or standards/regulations) is essential for market entrants. Entry routes will vary and include local partnerships, tenders, direct approach to NHS agencies/commissioning agencies, or via opportunities on relevant procurement web sites.

Suppliers currently need to adhere to relevant UK/European Union (EU) compliance rules and regulations. The UK left the EU on January 31, 2020 so certain requirements may change following the end of the transition period on December 31, 2020. The UK procurement system can be complicated and lengthy, especially for innovative or unique solutions. Financial pressures often lead NHS agencies to make purchasing decisions based on cost. It will be essential to be able to demonstrate a solution’s effectiveness and economic value. This is a very competitive market.

Many of the leading technology providers are present in the UK: Cerner, IBM, Oracle, Hyland Software, EMIS, HP, BT, Apple as well as smaller developers and technology providers.
