UK Information Technology 5G Expansion 2024

As part of a wider campaign to get the country more connected, the UK Government is paying special attention to the rollout of 5G and fiber optic networks. Presently, the UK Government has launched the Open Networks Programme, an investment of nearly $400 million into the diversification and expansion of the country’s current 5G and 4G networks. Additionally, the $6.6 billion Project Gigabit continues to help connect schools, homes and workplaces in more rural areas.

Despite the UK Government’s strong support to delivering internet connection across the country, the UK lags behind other world leaders in terms of 5G connectivity and connectivity infrastructure, especially within underserved areas of the country. This gap creates potential opportunities for U.S. companies in the telecoms industry with expertise in 5G networks, small cell and fiber optic provision and installation.
Multiple million-dollar contracts have been awarded, with many more contracts to come. Details of opportunities can be found at Contracts Finder (search for “5G’ or “broadband”).

Areas targeted for increased connectivity are as follows:
•    Central and North Scotland
•    North, Mid, and Southwest Wales
•    Northeast England
•    Devon
•    Hertfordshire

U.S. business in the telecommunications sector have a further advantage due to strong U.S.- UK relations, as the British Government has banned Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from entering the 5G market due to security concerns. U.S. companies have a worldwide reputation for innovative products, after-sales service and training which makes them competitive in the UK market.
