Thailand International Airports Expansion

According to the Airports of Thailand’s annual report, although passenger volumes have not reached pre-COVID levels, between October 2022 and September 2023, Thailand’s airports welcomed approximately 100 million passengers, with volumes expected to grow.

Under the AOT airport expansion master plan, major airport projects are earmarked for development in the next five-plus years (2025-2030) to support increased passenger volume.  AOT plans to spend approximately $10 billion on airport construction, including the following expansion plans:

  1. Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project: Expand all terminal wings, including the main passenger terminal, and add a second satellite terminal.  The bidding to select consultants for the project’s feasibility and design will begin in 2025, followed by the selection of construction contractors in early 2026.
  2. Don Mueang International Airport Development Phase 3 Project: Increase the airport’s capacity from 30 million to 50 million passengers annually by 2030.  The design of the airport expansion is almost complete and bidding for this project is expected in 2025.

Thailand’s Prime Minister intends to accelerate the development of Thailand’s airports as part of the Government’s plan to transform the country into an aviation hub. The airport expansion plans offer opportunities for U.S. companies in airport design and construction, ground support equipment, security screening equipment, and airfield lighting equipment, among others.
