Tanzania Agribusiness Growing Poultry Sector Opportunities

Tanzania’s poultry sector presents significant opportunities for U.S. companies due to the country’s growing demand for poultry products, favorable government policies, and a developing agricultural sector.  One-third of Tanzania’s population is involved in agriculture and of this 78% are involved in poultry farming.  Chicken is the main protein source for the Tanzanian diet. Key opportunities for U.S. companies in the Tanzanian poultry industry include:

1. Poultry Breeding and Feed Production

  • Breed and Hatchery Technology: U.S. companies specializing in poultry breeding, hatchery equipment, and advanced poultry genetics can tap into Tanzania’s growing demand for high-quality poultry breeds.
  • Poultry Feed Production: High demand exists for quality poultry feed.  U.S. companies with expertise in animal nutrition and feed production have the opportunity to supply Tanzania with high-quality, nutritious feed ingredients and ready-to-use poultry feed.

2. Poultry Processing and Cold Storage

  • Processing Plant Technology: Tanzania’s expanding poultry sector is modernizing, resulting in a growing need for poultry processing equipment, including slaughtering, plucking, cutting, and packaging technologies. This includes both small-scale and large-scale processing equipment.
  • Cold Storage and Refrigeration: There is growing market demand for processed poultry products, necessitating refrigeration and cold storage solutions to ensure the preservation and distribution of poultry products throughout the country.

3. Poultry Health and Veterinary Products

  • Veterinary Medicines and Vaccines: The poultry industry in Tanzania seeks veterinary products to prevent diseases including Newcastle disease, avian influenza, and other infections. U.S. companies are able to supply vaccines, antibiotics, and other poultry health products.
  • Disease Monitoring and Control: Tanzanian poultry farmers seek diagnostics and disease monitoring systems to minimize losses and prevent disease spread.

4. Supply Chain Infrastructure and Logistics

  • Logistics and Distribution Solutions: Local logistics providers are seeking to partner to improve poultry supply chains, ensuring timely and cost-effective transportation of feed, day-old chicks, and poultry products throughout Tanzania.

5. Sustainable and Organic Poultry Farming

  • Sustainable Practices and Certifications: U.S. technology is welcome, including sustainable farming practices such as organic poultry production, waste management systems, and energy-efficient solutions to enhance the sustainability of Tanzania’s poultry sector. This could appeal to environmentally conscious consumers in both local and international markets.

6. Technology and Innovation

  • Agri-tech Solutions: U.S. companies specializing in agricultural technologies can introduce innovations such as automated feeding systems, climate control systems for poultry houses, and data analytics for poultry farm management.
