Taiwan Pet Foods and Appliances Market

Taiwan’s increasing living costs, demanding work schedules and wage stagnation have driven a historic and dramatic decline in fertility rates; in contrast, however, according to the Taiwan Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute, Taiwan’s pet ownership rates have skyrocketed, reaching 66.2% in 2021. The pet economy in Taiwan is fast growing and is generating opportunities for various products and services.

The number of pet cats and dogs in Taiwan reached 2.95 million in 2021 and is expected to surpass 4 million by 2025 according to the Taiwan Institute of Economics Research. As a result of the increase in pet ownership, there are now over 7,200 pet hotels, pet hospitals, pet salons and other pet-related stores in Taiwan. The average cost of raising a pet in Taiwan is US$160 per month. Revenues in the sector are projected to reach U.S. $8 billion by 2025.

U.S. pet food, products, and appliances are viewed as high-quality in the Taiwan market. Pet food, medicated shampoos, healthcare-related retail items, or specialty foods for elderly pets are among the most promising opportunities for U.S. companies.
