Singapore Healthcare Hospitals Redevelopment

Two of Singapore’s university hospitals will be redeveloped to meet Singapore’s growing healthcare needs.

Alexandra Hospital: One of the country’s oldest hospitals, the 1938-erected Alexandra Hospital, will be redeveloped into a bigger 1300-bed hospital. The ambitious project will commence in 2028 and is expected to take 10 years to complete. Its land area will expand from 12.2ha to an estimated 13.3ha. The current 300-bed hospital will stay operational throughout the redevelopment.

The new facility will have two additional high-rise buildings and will include a new pandemic-ready emergency department directly connected to the intensive care unit and operating theater. The current urgent care center will be upgraded to a 24-hour emergency department. The upgraded hospital will also have beds for patients in hospice and psychiatric care. In addition, a nursing home with approximately 400 beds will be built on the same campus.

Apart from improvements to the physical infrastructure, Alexandra Hospital prides itself with a differentiated care model which aims to make complex healthcare simpler for patients by offering patients acute and rehabilitative care by the same care team in the same location. This ensures that the patient does not need to transfer across medical teams, wards, or hospitals and is managed by one group of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals throughout their hospital stay. Piloted in 2018, this care model has resulted in shorter hospital stays for patients. This model will be implemented at-scale when the Alexandra Hospital redevelopment is completed. To complement this, there will also be a Virtual Care Center to provide support to discharged patients, to minimize the need for emergency visits and hospital readmissions.

National University Hospital: Alexandra Hospital is part of the National University Health System (NUHS) cluster, one of three public healthcare clusters in Singapore. The National University Hospital will be redeveloped starting in 2025 and will also take 10 years to complete. Currently, the National University Hospital has 1,200 beds and serves as western Singapore’s main emergency and trauma care hospital. Combined, the NUHS cluster serves Singapore’s population in the western region of the country where 25% of the population is aged over 65. The redevelopment will add more to hospital capacity, intensify land use and improve the existing road network.
