Singapore Green Maritime
Singapore is a leading global maritime hub, a vital node on the trans-Pacific shipping lane, and an essential stakeholder in the maritime sector’s green transition. As the country takes steps towards a ‘Green Maritime Fuel’ economy to meet its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, various policies that encourage the bunkering of green methanol and ammonia as cleaner fuel alternatives have been introduced. The sector’s digitalization is another crucial aspect, as technological innovation is needed to overcome the obstacles to transitioning to cleaner fuel.
To encourage the transition, the Singapore government has implemented the following:
• Ammonia dual-fuel engines will be registered under the Singapore Registry of Ships from 2026.
• A new maritime energy training facility will be set up by 2026 to educate on near-zero emissions.
• MPA is studying ammonia import terminals, ammonia bunkering, and power generation.
• The use of methanol will be set as a national standard in 2025.
• MPA has also called for a license application to supply methanol as a marine fuel in Singapore by the end of 2024.
The Singapore government welcomes foreign investors/companies to showcase their innovations and technologies that further expand the maritime industry’s digitalization while strengthening cybersecurity. Additionally, the supply and distribution of green methanol and ammonia will be encouraged as the country decarbonizes the maritime sector.
