Poland Mobile Banking
The number of mobile payment users is growing faster than the number of customers activating online banking. There is a dynamic growth in the number of mobile payments carried out with smartphones, as well as other transactions made via banking applications, such as money transfers, public transport ticket purchases or mobile phone top-ups.
The number of Poles managing their bank accounts on their smartphones is growing constantly at a dynamic pace. There were 12,1 million active mobile bank customers achieved in June 2019, a 15% increase in comparison with June 2018 (10.5 million). According to the Polish Bank Association, there were 9.5 million active mobile application users at the end of June 2019, and eleven of Poland’s largest commercial banks indicated that they 8.7 million customers managed their accounts using mobile applications.
Mobile applications provided by Polish banks offer customers a level of technological advancement that competes with the world’s leading fintech brands. Checking balances, transaction history and money transfers are the most popular functions among Polish mobile banking customers. Other banking functions include: mobile payments, applying for loans, payment card ordering, opening new accounts, buying insurance and many others.
The number of “mobile only” bank customers has been systematically growing. In the third quarter of 2018 there were 3.3 million mobile only customers, while in 2019’s second quarter, this number increased to 4.9 million. Mobile banking is gaining popularity at a quicker pace than online banking. In the second quarter of 2018, banking application users amounted to less than 46 percent of people actively using online banking. Data presented by the Polish Bank Association indicated that at the end of the second quarter of 2019, the overall number of active digital banking users exceeded 52 percent.
At the end of the second quarter of 2019, mobile banking users conducted more than 160 million transactions in Poland. The majority of the transactions were money transfers and Blik payments. Blik is a mobile payment system implemented by the Polish Payment Standard company, which was created by the largest banks in Poland to facilitate payments in the country’s e-commerce environment.
Poland is one of the first countries worldwide where entire card acceptance network and payment terminal is ready for contactless transactions using a smartphone or smartwatch.
