Panama New Government's Projects

Panama held presidential elections on May 5, 2024. The new administration has announced plans to develop several major projects during their 5-year term.

In his campaign, the new President of Panama, Jose Raul Mulino, promised Panamanians the development of several major projects, the most notable being the Panama-David Railway. In his first meeting with his ministers, President Mulino announced the creation of the National Railway Secretariat that will be led by Mr. Henry Faruup. This secretariat will oversee the studies, planning, and execution of the Panama-David Railway. The railway will be 400 kilometers long, with the objective of promoting and developing the economy in Panama City and in the interior of the country.

Another project that was announced by the government is the development of the “University City.” This academic center will be modernized with a 50-year plan put in place. The current one at the University of Panama would be converted into a government and city center with buildings and parking.

In another announcement, The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) presented the “Rehabilitation Plan for the National Road Network”. This plan, which will be executed under the “high urgency” directive and aims to immediately repair the main streets and avenues of the country. This will improve the safety and efficiency of the roads for the Panamanians.

President Mulino is also supporting the continuity of the Children’s Hospital construction and the creation of several Oncology Centers in different cities around the country.

The Panamanian central purchasing portal, PanamaCompra, frequently posts tender opportunities in all industry sectors. This is an official, free, internet-based, electronic tendering service, where vendors can bid on the tenders by registering on the website. While not a perfect system this is one of the best places to learn of opportunities in Panama.
