Pakistan Agribusiness Poultry Processing
Pakistan’s processed poultry sector witnessed a cumulative growth rate of approximately 10% during the fiscal year 2023-2024 (Pakistan’s fiscal year runs from July 1–June 30.) The primary factors contributing to this growth include rapid urbanization, high consumer demand, growing investments by poultry businesses, and growing appetite for new processing and packaging technologies. Members of the industry believe that the growth trajectory of the processed poultry sector has been incremental and is expected to follow a similar trend for the next 3–4 years. With no foreign brand presence, this sector is dominated a small number of domestic businesses, such as K&Ns, Sabroso, Big Bird, and Sufi Foods, who have established vertically integrated farming and processing facilities. However, there exists plenty of room for new entrants to cater to growing demand for poultry.
The agricultural sector in general is a mainstay of Pakistan’s economy, which contributes approximately 22.4% to the national Gross Domestic Product. The poultry sector constitutes a significant share of this contribution to GDP and witnessed an average growth rate of approximately 12% last year. Pakistan produces over 1.2 billion kilograms of chicken meat and 10 billion table eggs annually, making it the eighth largest poultry-producing country in the world. However, the per capita consumption of poultry products in Pakistan is significantly lower when compared to other markets in the region of South Asia. Fewer processing facilities, less technical training, and marginal production of processing equipment contribute to this trend.
Due to its limited manufacturing capacity, the Pakistani poultry processing industry relies on imported machinery to use in its poultry processing plants. U.S. companies already enjoy an edge over their competitors in Pakistan due to the generally superior quality of their equipment and aftersales services.
Some prominent export prospects for U.S. companies are:
- Plug and play processing lines
- Live bird reception facilities
- Poultry defeathering equipment
- Kill line equipment
- Evisceration equipment
- Poultry pre-chill equipment
- Weight and grading equipment
- Cut-up and portioning equipment
- Poultry packing equipment
- Packaging equipment
- Cold chain solutions
