Mozambique Foodservice Sector Growth

Overview:

The amount Mozambicans spend on food and drinks is set to continue to increase. Over the short term, between 2023 and 2024, downward food and non-alcoholic drinks price pressures will drive slower household spending growth on food and non-alcoholic drinks. However, between 2023 and 2027, consumer preference for cheaper alcoholic drinks will support the growth of spending for alcoholic beverages, while increasing spirit consumption will underpin steady growth in total alcohol consumption. Demand for staples such as pasta products and bread, rice and cereals will support medium-term food spending growth, with non-alcoholic drinks spending growth being driven by robust spending on carbonated drinks because of low price points.

Data from Mozambique’s National Statistics Institute (INE) indicates that, in the third quarter of 2022, Mozambique’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 3.6%, influenced mainly by the hotel and restaurant sectors (13.32%).

An emerging middle class with higher purchasing power and expectations due to mega- investments in natural gas and the energy sectors is driving urbanization growth.
Because of the Mozambique’s rapid tourism growth as a regional and international travel destination, international gastronomy is on the rise, linked with ultra-high end luxury tourism, including both bush and beach safari experiences.
