Mexico Steel Import Delay

U.S. steel exporters planning shipments to Mexico over the coming months should be aware of potential delays in obtaining “automatic steel import notices.”

Approval times for these permits can take up to 20 business days, particularly if the initial application is incomplete. The Mexican Secretariat of Economy is also expected to pause processing from December 19, 2024, until early January 2025, meaning applications filed in December may not be processed until mid-January 2025.

Furthermore, new regulations now require a separate Aviso Siderúrgico for each unit price variation within a shipment, increasing the volume of applications and extending processing times.

While the Mexican importer is usually responsible for meeting all import requirements; it is helpful for U.S. exporters to be aware of these potential delays and provide support to their clients and partners as needed.

Recommendations to Avoid Delays in Steel Imports:
•    Submit Permits in Advance: It is best to file import permits well before shipments reach Mexico, as these permits are valid for up to 120 days. Early submission helps prevent delays in customs clearance.

•    Ensure Accurate Applications: Importers and exporters should thoroughly review applications to ensure the applications are complete and that all requirements are fully met.  U.S. exporters should be familiar with the requirements. Incomplete or incorrect applications can cause serious delays and additional costs.
