Malaysia Oral Healthcare

Malaysia’s dental services market is expanding, driven by rising disposable incomes, increasing awareness of oral health, and growing demand for aesthetic dentistry. A 2021 Kantar study, a market research platform, revealed significant oral health challenges among Malaysians: 94% of adults have gum problems, 71% suffer from tooth sensitivity, and nearly 46% experience tooth yellowing, likely due to enamel loss. These figures highlight a substantial consumer need for oral health solutions in Malaysia.

To meet these challenges, the Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia has launched the National Oral Health Strategic Plan 2022-2030, alongside a Strategic Plan to Reduce Sugar Among Malaysians (2024-2030). These frameworks focus on redesigning the oral healthcare system, raising public awareness, improving service delivery, and digitalization of records. Programs like the School Dental Clinic, which provides dental services to teachers, staff, and their families, as well as collaboration with the private sector and NGOs, aim to support marginalized communities.

According to the report “Malaysia Dental Services Market” by Ken Research, the industry is expected to grow at a 6.4% compounded annually, reaching US$2.8 billion by 2027. Despite a decline in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions, the market is rebounding.  Natural and organic oral care products are becoming increasingly popular.

High-growth segments include preventive care, corrective oral health, tele dentistry, and dental tourism. Private dental clinics hold the largest market share (70%), followed by hospitals (20%) and public dental facilities (10%). The largest group of patients are adults aged 25-54 (50%), with children aged 0-18 (30%) and seniors 55+ (20%) also contributing significantly to demand.
