Malaysia proposes an ambitious plan to become the Aviation Hub of Southeast Asia by constructing a new aerotropolis.
The Kedah State Government of Malaysia is in the design phase for a new concept project to build and operate an international integrated logistics and transshipment hub for cargo, MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul), and aerospace manufacturing called the Kedah Aerotropolis on an area of 3,965 hectares. The Kedah Aerotropolis is proposed as an ASEAN Aviation Hub, which will be comprised of three major components:
1. Airport City – integrated logistics & transshipment cargo hub, ASEAN MRO Center of Excellence, international airport with supporting facilities
2. Business Park – industrial facilities for the aerospace industry and SMEs, institutional and community facilities
3. SIDAM Logistic, Aerospace, and Manufacturing (SLAM) Hub – multi-modal logistics, advanced manufacturing center, MRO support, and services.
The project has been proposed by the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), the regional development authority focused on accelerating economic growth in the four northern states of Peninsular Malaysia. NCER welcomes interested U.S. companies to reach out to learn about opportunities offered by the aerotropolis. These projects are expected to support the growth of e-commerce, not only in Malaysia but also in Southern Thailand. Pos Aviation, a subsidiary of Pos Malaysia, is an end-user of air cargo and ground operations. At the same time, the collaboration with KLIA College is expected to produce the workforce needed at the Kedah Aerotropolis.
