Kuwait Energy Digitalizing the Oil and Gas Sector
Kuwait is investing heavily in information and communication technology, services, and digital systems in the oil and gas sector.
In October 2024, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) confirmed its plans to spend $410 billion on a long-term energy strategy. $300 billion is expected to be spent on conventional energy projects such as the development of oil and gas production as well as refinery projects and $110 billion in energy transition projects including digital transformation, renewables, green hydrogen, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS).
Operating under the umbrella of KPC, the Kuwait Oil Company (state-owned company for upstream operations) www.kockw.com, announced its five-year digital transformation strategy aimed to implement the latest technologies and innovations in its operations. KOC has allocated a $800 million budget for digital transformation projects and initiatives.
Their “Big Data Galaxy” scheme will include eleven sub-projects for developing the IT infrastructure and digitizing data, improving workforce using artificial intelligence, assisting in decision-making through machine learning, digitizing operations to enhance predictive maintenance, improving exploration, and increasing production. One of the upcoming projects (estimated at $60 million) is upgrading KOC’s corporate network. The project will include networking, firewalls, cabling, and cybersecurity solutions. U.S. companies interested in participating in these projects are recommended to appoint a local representative who has significant experience working with the state-owned companies.
