Japan Building & Construction - The World Expo Osaka 2025
The first Request For Proposals (RFPs), which will be for design and construction of the U.S. pavilion at the World Expo 2025, set to take place in Osaka, are expected to be published before the end of 2022. In April 2023, the World Expo Osaka 2025 expects to hand over most sites to the countries and institutions that are planning to construct pavilions at the Expo.
After beating out cities of Ekaterinburg, Russia and Baku, Azerbaijan in the race to host the World Expo in 2025, 170 member states of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) voted in favor of Osaka’s bid on November 23, 2018 during BIE’s 164th General Assembly in Paris. World Expos, which are held every five years, can last up to six months and cost millions of dollars to host, but can help put a city on the global map by bringing in international visitors and attention. Dubai, United Arab Emirates hosted the last one in 2021 after one year delay due to COVID. Past Expos introduced such wonders as the Eiffel Tower, the Ferris Wheel and Seattle’s Space Needle. Osaka’s Expo is aimed at finding solutions to challenges facing humanity by leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and more for the public good.
The Government of Japan (GOJ)/Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition is hosting the World Expo Osaka 2025 from April 13 to October 13, 2025 on a man-made island in Osaka Bay, Osaka Yumeshima, near Kansai International Airport. The projected number of visitors is approximately 28.2 million, and the estimated economic ripple effect is about 2 trillion yen (about US$15 billion). About 150 countries and 25 international organizations, as well as private companies, educational and research institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)/Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs), and citizen groups from all over the world will participate.
The theme for World Expo Osaka 2025 is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” and aims to achieve two goals: 1) contributing to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030; and 2) achieving Japan’s national strategy “Society 5.0.” Japan has defined “Society 5.0” as the key to develop a human-centered society that progresses economically and resolves social issues through a system that combines both cyber and physical spaces in a sophisticated manner. Moreover, “Society 5.0” is an aspirational community environment that can resolve a variety of issues on a global scale with technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, big data, and biotechnology. A “Society 5.0” community will also be able to achieve appropriately defined SDGs.
