Ireland Digital Health Strategy 2024-2030
The market for Digital Healthcare in Ireland is rapidly evolving with a growing emphasis on expanding electronic health records (EHRs) and telemedicine which was accelerated by new and urgent needs brought about by the pandemic. Despite ongoing challenges such as poor, inconsistent access to healthcare services in rural areas and data privacy concerns under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), new opportunities now exist for American companies to introduce innovative solutions and play a key role in shaping the future of Irish digital healthcare.
The Irish government launched its comprehensive digital health strategy in May 2024 to address pressing needs like capacity constraints in public hospitals, long waiting lists, and high mental health burdens.
Titled ‘A Digital Health Framework for Ireland 2024-2030,’ the strategy prioritizes nationwide EHR implementation, ensuring a unified and accessible system for both patients and healthcare providers. It also aims to improve internet infrastructure in rural areas, making telemedicine more widely available and reliable. Additionally, the strategy includes measures to enhance data privacy and security in line with GDPR.
The strategy marks a decisive step towards modernizing Ireland’s healthcare system and overcoming the barriers that have impeded progress in the past.
Ireland’s focus on digitalizing its healthcare system creates opportunities for U.S. companies to provide advanced technologies, data management solutions, and IT infrastructure to enhance efficiency and integration - especially as U.S. companies are widely regarded for their innovation, quality products, and after-sale training and service. Specifically, U.S, companies can avail of export opportunities from digital healthcare reforms in fintech (enhanced health insurance and payment systems), smart cities (integrated health data), cybersecurity (heightened data protection needs), and edtech (digital health education and training).
