Hungary 5G Deployment

Widespread coverage of 4G mobile and broadband networks is a sign of favorable development trends in the usage of connected devices in Hungary. The three major operators all offer 2G, 3G and 4G services with Vodafone and Magyar Telekom having launched 5G commercial services at the end of 2019 and early 2020.  A 3rd operator, Telenor, created a 5G test network in May 2019.

IoT adoption is supported by the increased deployment of 5G. By the end of 2020, 60% of the total harmonized 5G spectrum had been implemented in Hungary, significantly above the 51% EU average (according to DESI). In September 2021, Hungary had the 11th-fastest 5G download speed globally and the 4th-fastest upload speed.

The development of 5G networks in Hungary will open sales opportunities for a wide range of products and solutions. Growth opportunities, however, will be offset by constrained consumer and enterprise spending in the short term. Hungary is expected to offer long-term opportunities for smart devices and wearables. Increased adoption rates are expected in product categories such as smart watches and fitness trackers, smart assistant speakers, foldable and dual screen smartphones, and wireless earbuds. AR and VR devices may also see increased adoption rates if vendor innovation and the deployment of 5G networks lead to compelling mass market product rollouts and wide use.
