Guatemala Cybersecurity
The Guatemalan Congress is currently evaluating Initiative 6347, which encompasses the Cybersecurity Law and the country’s potential adhesion to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. This legislative advancement represents a significant milestone in enhancing Guatemala’s digital infrastructure and security landscape. For American companies within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, this legislation would create new avenues for market penetration. Guatemala already relies heavily on cybersecurity services from American companies, meaning there is a strong foundation for these brands to increase their presence. The adoption of international cybersecurity standards, coupled with the legislative framework provided by the Budapest Convention, is likely to create a more stable and secure environment for conducting business, reducing the risks associated with cyber threats.
Moreover, as Guatemala strengthens its legal and regulatory framework around cybersecurity, there will be growing demand for advanced technology solutions and expertise. American ICT companies, known for their cutting-edge innovations and leadership in cybersecurity, are uniquely positioned to meet this demand. Opportunities for collaboration with local businesses and government institutions will likely increase, allowing U.S. firms to provide essential services such as cybersecurity training, infrastructure development, and digital transformation consulting. By engaging early with these legislative changes, American companies can not only enhance their competitive advantage but also contribute to the overall growth and modernization of Guatemala’s digital economy.
Given the current discussion timeline, it’s expected that this initiative will be presented to the full Congress for approval by the end of 2024. For more information, please contact CS Guatemala ICT sector lead at carolina.barrientos@trade.gov
