Costa Rica Airports
The Government of Costa Rica (GOCR) aims to increase investment in its two main international airports. The first project is with Juan SantamarÃa International (SJO) which serves the San José Metropolitan area and will undergo a 10-year expansion project. Built in the mid-1950s, SJO has outgrown its current tourism and cargo operation capacity and requires more than $100 million in investment over the next 2-3 years. Aeris Costa Rica is the current airport operator that will continue to work with local authorities to implement the SJO improvement plan which will include a terminal expansion, runway maintenance, and new equipment to enable the growing demands.
In addition, Costa Rican authorities announced the expansion of the Daniel Oduber Quirós International (LIR) Airport, in Liberia, Guanacaste. The project will include a new runway, a new maneuvering area, and related works. The project includes an estimated investment of US$100 million and its execution will be financed with 50% of funds from the national budget. The remaining amount will be contributed by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and external financing as part of the budget program of the Technical Council of Civil Aviation.
