Colombia Pet Industry
The Pet Industry in Colombia has been growing rapidly in the last five years. In 2020, the market was USD 2.4 billion and is expected to continue to grow 3.7% per year from 2023 to 2027. This growth is the result of three factors: an increased number of pet owners in Colombia, from 25% to 30% in the last four years; a growing middle class that can afford to spend more on pet care; and the rise in awareness of the importance of pet care in Colombia.
The Pet Industry is divided into two sectors: pet food and pet care products. Pet food is the largest sector with 60% of the market and pet care products, which include pet toys, bedding, and supplies with 40% of the market. A variety of national and international brands compete for the pet market share in Colombia. The leading brands are Whiskas, Pedigree, Royal Canin, Nutro, and Hill’s Science Diet.
According to the DIAN (The Colombian National Tax and Customs Authority), the following are the top five imported pet products in 2022:
- Pet food: USD 1.07 million
- Pet toys: USD 230 million
- Pet bedding: USD 170 million
- Pet collars and Leashes: USD 150 million
- Pet shampoo: USD 120 million
The United States was the main supplier of pet products in 2022, accounting for 35% of total imports or USD 365 million. This is mainly because of the high quality of pet products manufactured in the United States and the strong trade relations between the two countries. Colombian imports of pet products from other countries included Brazil with USD 210 million (20%) and China with USD 165 million (15%).
Colombia does not have a large domestic manufacturing capacity for pet products. The market has a high demand for pet products that meet nutritional needs of pets. There is also high demand for pet care services.
