CHINA’S CHENGDU-CHONGQING ECONOMIC CIRCLE
Chengdu and Chongqing are the two largest municipalities in Southwest China. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, and Chongqing, the largest autonomous municipality in China – was separated from Sichuan province in 1997. The two cities are connected by a 1.5 hour-long high-speed rail ride and share many common traits from industry composition to tradition and culture.
The State Council’s master plan calls for the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle to become China’s fourth economic growth cluster after the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area regions. The plan’s emphasis on infrastructure development presents abundant opportunities for U.S. businesses, including buildout of the two cities’ international airports and enhancement of a regional airport network, high-speed rail connections with Northwest China, Central China, and Eastern China, highway network expansions in the Sichuan-Tibetan region and in underdeveloped areas between the two municipalities and development of the upper Yangtze River’s shipping capacity.
In 2022, the Plan envisions 260 large projects with a projected investment of $314 billion.
