China Motorcycle Market

Chinese demand for large engine displacement motorcycles has increased in recent years, especially for imported models.

According to official data from the China Automotive Industry Yearbook, motorcycle imports increased 62% in 2020 compared to 2019. Sales of imported motorcycles increased by 82% from January to July 2020 versus the same period in 2019, according to China Central TV. Demand for large engine displacement motorcycles specifically has also increased in recent years, reaching 177,000 in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 67%, according to Huaxia Securities company. Imported models stand out, especially in the “super-displacement class.”

Almost all major international brands have entered the Chinese market and continue to expand. Joint ventures between European and Japanese brands and leading domestic motorcycle manufacturers have intensified market competition with U.S.-made motorcycles. Best prospects for American motorcycle companies are those that specialize in producing motorcycles with large engine displacement.
