China Hydrogen Vehicle Market

China’s commitment to achieving peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050 is driving the rapid development and deployment of clean energy vehicles. China’s production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) increased from 37 units in 2016 to 1,586 units in 2021. The total stock of such vehicles is predicted to exceed 10,000 units in 2022.

During the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, China used over 1,000 hydrogen FCVs, including passenger vehicles, buses, and ski trucks to serve athletes, game officials, support staff, the media, and visitors. These hydrogen-powered vehicles were provided by Olympic sponsor Toyota, together with vehicles provided by Chinese domestic manufacturers.

In August 2021, the Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province, Shanghai, and Guangdong Province became the first demonstration locations for hydrogen-powered vehicles. The industry is poised for robust growth in the next few decades. U.S. companies with products and solutions in the sector are encouraged to explore specific opportunities.
