China Coffee Processing Equipment Sector
Coffee consumption in China recorded double-digit growth in the last decade creating what some refer to as a “coffee revolution.” The rapidly expanding market creates significant opportunities for American coffee chains and coffee processing equipment suppliers.
In 2020, China’s General Administration of Customs (GACC) reported coffee and coffee product imports of 70,622 tons, a year-on-year increase of 8.3% while total import value increased 16.1% to USD $313.1 million. Among imported coffee and coffee products, 80.8% was unroasted coffee. In 2019, coffee shop outlet growth in China reached 23.2% then fell to 2.9% in 2020 due to the pandemic but 59% of Chinese operators the World Coffee Portal surveyed at the end of 2020 still reported positive total sales growth over the last 12 months.
This booming market potential highlights strong demand for coffee processing equipment. GACC data indicates China imported 649,301 sets of pump-driven coffee makers in 2020, a year-on-year increase of 82.5%. Besides coffee makers, other prospects for U.S. companies include coffee bean roasters, grinding machines, and packaging equipment.
