China Chongqing Retail Market Opportunities

With a total population of over 31 million, Chongqing is the largest retail and consumption center in Southwestern China. One of China’s four municipalities reporting directly to the central government, the city’s retail industry is very robust and competitive, particularly with the establishment of several foreign and domestic retailers, such as Walmart, Carrefour, Metro and Wangfujing.

The total size of the city’s retail market increased by 18.5% to reach $213 billion in 2021, only behind Beijing and Shanghai, according to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce.

The Chongqing Government hopes to convert the city into an International Consumption Center city by 2025, making it one of only five cities, and the only one in Western China, to receive this designation. This will allow a retailer to receive the equivalent of up to $150,000 funding support from the local government if they establish their first regional or China flagship store within the city.
