China Chongqing Rail Transit

Chongqing, the largest of the four direct-controlled municipalities of China with a population over 32 million people and an area of 82,400 square kilometers, opened its first metro line of Line 2 in 2005. It has constructed the largest rail-transit operational network of a mountain city in the world and became a world-class rail-transit city. Chongqing Rail Transit (CRT) operates a total track length of 501 kilometers of 12 rail transit lines. Lines 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, the Loop Line, and the Guobo Line are conventional heavy-rail metro lines with a maximum operating speed of 100 km/h. JianTiao Line is a suburban rapid transit line, as China’s first dual-powered line with a maximum operating speed of 120 km/h.  Lines 2 and 3 are high-capacity monorails with a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h. Bishan Sky Shuttle Demonstration Line is a small-capacity smart rail transit system equipped with unmanned driving system, automatic positioning and scheduling, facial recognition, and smart ticket inspection, and operates at speed up to 80 km/h.

The fourth phase of Chongqing Urban Rail Transit Construction Planning (2020-2025) project involves a total of 115 stations on nine lines, with a total mileage of 238 kilometers and a total investment of about RMB 150 billion. Construction is under way on Line 18 and several other lines, in addition to extensions to Lines 5, 6 and 10.  CRT pioneers efficiency in its new rail transit facilities and emphasizes sustainable development of rail transit throughout its life cycle. It brings export opportunities for U.S. OEMs in urban rail transit rolling stock, vehicle, in-vehicle equipment and components, bogie system, traction buffer connection device, brake system, steering system, suspension system, and train control system etc. as well as track maintenance and friction and noise control.

According to the “14th Five-Year Plan” (2021-2025) of Chongqing’s urban rail transit construction, by 2025, Chongqing will form a rail transit operation network of about 600 kilometers.
