Chile Infrastructure Opportunities
On May 8th, 2024, the Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Obras Públicas – MOPW) presented the roadmap for all the tenders the government will conduct from 2024 until 2028. This plan encompasses 43 different projects totaling USD $17.6 billion.
The primary focus will be on projects scheduled for completion by the end of the current government term (March 2026), comprising 24 different projects amounting to nearly USD $15.6 billion. This represents approximately 4 percent of Chile’s GDP. These projects encompass various initiatives, including road concessions, prison infrastructure, the Los Andes customs facility, and railway developments in the ValparaÃso and Santiago regions. Among these, the railway project in Santiago is the single most significant, with a concession value of USD $3.8 billion.
The management of these projects will fall under the purview of the Directorate of Concessions (Dirección de Concesiones), which operates within the MOPW. The ministry has stated that these concessions will be open to both local and international private parties. These concessions mark the largest number of concessions published in Chile at the same time, in terms of number of projects and U.S. dollar value. For more information visit Concessions MOP.
U.S. companies are well-positioned to engage in Chile’s infrastructure sector due to their innovative technologies, design capabilities, engineering expertise, and post-sale maintenance and training services. Additionally, U.S. firms benefit from the U.S.-Chile Free Trade Agreement and Bilateral Tax Treaty.
