Canada Electric Vehicle Battery
With Canada’s stated goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, the federal and the provincial government are supporting private sector developments for domestic electric vehicle (EV) battery production, including USD $12 billion in funding from the federal budget’s Green Infrastructure Stream and from provincial clean technologies funding.
The Canadian market has significant business opportunities for suppliers of related systems, equipment, and components for the new manufacturing facilities of EV and EV batteries. Both the U.S. and Canadian Governments are actively supporting development of this industry
Notable developments include:
- September 22, 2020: Ford Motors Canada announce development of manufacturing facility in Ontario toward producing five EV models and EV battery pack production. The total investments will be nearly USD $2 billion.
- March 7, 2022: Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry and GM Canada announce agreement to build a GM factory in Quebec, Canada to make cathode active material (CAM), an integral component of electric-car batteries. The total investments will be over USD $400 million.
- March 23, 2022: Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, the Ontario Premier, and the Mayor of Windsor, Ontario, announce Stellantis N.V. and LG Energy Solution joint venture for development of manufacturing facility in Ontario for EV battery production. The plant will be operational by 2025. The total investments will be over USD $4.1 billion.
