Burma (Myanmar) Organic Fertilizer
Burmese enterprises in the agricultural sector are now pursuing partnership opportunities with U.S. turn-key contractors to establish domestic organic fertilizer production facilities.
The importation of fertilizers constitutes a significant aspect of Burma’s agribusiness landscape. Approximately 80 percent of agrochemical, inorganic, and organic fertilizers are imported from neighboring countries. This import volume typically exceeds one million tons annually. Following the military coup in February 2021, the administration imposed stringent import constraints, affecting over 85 percent of all imported commodities.
These ongoing restrictions, coupled with escalating fertilizer prices, supply chain limitations, and environmental concerns, have prompted local enterprises to explore the feasibility of establishing domestic organic fertilizer production. The business community seeks joint venture and turn-key contracting opportunities with U.S. companies.
United States enterprises must exercise caution and refrain from engaging with entities aligned with the military or those subjected to sanctions. Conducting thorough due diligence assessments on local partners is strongly recommended. The United States Commercial Service in Burma can be a valuable point of contact for those seeking to connect with potential local partners and distributors.
