Burma (Myanmar) Food and Beverage Franchising

The 2024 market outlook for franchises in Myanmar/Burma is looking more optimistic than in recent years.  The franchise sector in Myanmar experienced disruptions following the military coup in 2021.  Some ASEAN-based franchise chains withdrew from the market, while others continued operations through their existing outlets.  Significant U.S. food franchises such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Krispy Kreme, and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf maintained their presence in Myanmar despite the political and economic instability. From late-2023 onwards, the sector has seen new food franchise brands enter, indicating a gradual recovery and renewed interest in the Myanmar franchise market.

The Myanmar franchise sector now offers expanded opportunities for U.S. food and beverage medium-sized franchise brands. U.S. companies interested in franchise partnership opportunities are invited to contact office.burma@trade.gov for more information.

United States enterprises must exercise caution and refrain from engaging with entities aligned with the military or those subjected to sanctions.  Conducting thorough due diligence assessments on local partners is strongly recommended.  The United States Commercial Service in Burma can be a valuable point of contact for those seeking to connect with potential local partners and distributors.  For an overview of the Burma market, please visit https://www.trade.gov/burma
