Burma (Myanmar) Agribusiness Organic Fertilizer
Burmese enterprises in the agricultural sector are actively pursuing collaboration with American turn-key contractors to establish domestic organic fertilizer production facilities.
The importation of fertilizers constitutes a significant aspect of Burma’s agribusiness landscape. Approximately 80 percent of agrochemical, inorganic, and organic fertilizers are imported from neighboring countries. This import volume ranges between 1.2 and 1.4 million tons annually. Following the military coup in February 2021, the administration under military leadership imposed stringent import constraints, affecting over 85 percent of all imported commodities.
The aftermath of these restrictions, coupled with escalating fertilizer prices, supply chain limitations, and environmental concerns, has prompted local fertilizer importers and manufacturers to explore the feasibility of establishing domestic organic fertilizer production. The business community seeks joint venture and turn-key contracting opportunities with U.S. companies.
United States enterprises must exercise caution and refrain from engaging with entities aligned with the military or those subjected to sanctions. Conducting thorough due diligence assessments on local partners is strongly recommended.
