Hydrogen Import Alliance in Austria - Growing Opportunities for U.S. Exporters
In July 2024, ten leading Austrian companies and infrastructure providers announced the creation of HIAA: the Hydrogen Import Alliance Austria. The purpose of this initiative is to develop a roadmap for high-volume hydrogen imports, which many see as necessary for the decarbonization of Austrian heavy industry.
HIAA is made up of the following companies and collaboration partners:
• Verbund (utility)
• Wiener Stadtwerke (utility)
• Gas Connect Austria (natural gas infrastructure)
• Austrian Gas Grid Management AG (natural gas infrastructure)
• TAG (natural gas infrastructure)
• OMV (oil and gas)
• voestalpine (steel)
• RHI Magnesita (metals/mining)
• AMAG Austria Metall (aluminum)
• LAT Nitrogen (chemicals, fertilizer)
According to Stefan Wagenhofer, Managing Director of Gas Connect Austria, Austria has a safe and efficient pipeline network in place, parts of which already allow the transport of hydrogen. With targeted investments in infrastructure, Austria could act as a central hub in the emerging European hydrogen backbone.
U.S. businesses in the energy sector have a worldwide reputation for innovation, quality, and after-sale service, and are well-positioned to compete in the Austrian market. The Commercial Service Austria is pleased to work with U.S. infrastructure companies, consultancies, hydrogen producers/traders, and others in the hydrogen production and distribution sectors offering U.S.-sourced products and services.
