Argentina Eliminates Capital Controls and Payment Timelines

As of April 14, 2025, the Argentine government has lifted most currency controls, locally known as the “cepo cambiario.” Individuals and businesses are now permitted to purchase U.S. dollars without restrictions.

This reform is a central pillar of President Javier Milei’s broader economic stabilization agenda as it allows Argentine companies to freely access foreign currency to pay for imported goods and services. Previously, importers were subject to a 30-day waiting period from the shipment’s registered arrival date before making payments. In addition, the new measure permits Argentine companies to repatriate profits abroad.

Supported by a $20 billion agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), this measure is another step toward normalizing Argentina’s business climate by creating a more transparent and predictable environment for trade and investment.
