—Air Passenger Enplanements Up 11% Year Over Year in May 2024

—Air Passenger Travel Between the United States and Europe Up 8.2% in May 2024


Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in May 2024:

U.S.-international air traffic passenger enplanements1 totaled:

  • 23.045 million in May 2024, up 11 (10.98) percent compared to May 2023, with enplanements reaching 104.7 percent of pre-pandemic May 2019 volume. 
     

Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in May 2024

  • Non-U.S. citizen air passenger arrivals to the United States from foreign countries totaled:
    • 4.973 million in May 2024, up 12.9 percent compared to May 2023.
       
    • This represents 90.7 percent of pre-pandemic May 2019 volume. 

On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals2 totaled 3.042 million in May 2024.  May overseas visitor arrivals reached 86.5 percent of pre-pandemic May 2019 volume, up from 79.3 percent in May 2024. (See May I-94 Advance Release)

  • U.S. citizen air passenger departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled:
    • 6.677 million in May 2024, up 11.1 percent compared to May 2023.
       
    • This exceeded May 2019 volume by 20.2 percent.
       

World Region Highlights in May 2024 (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures)

  • Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by Mexico 3.283 million, Canada 2.794 million, the United Kingdom 2.020 million, Germany 1.021 million, and the Dominican Republic 936,000.
     
  • International regional air travel to/from the United States:
    • Europe totaled 7.113 million passengers, up 8.2 percent over May 2023, and up only (+.2 percent) compared to May 2019.
      • (U.S citizen departures were up +13.5 percent compared to May 2019, while European citizen arrivals were down -17.8 percent.)
         
    • South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 5.494 million, up 13.6 percent over May 2023, and 14.7 percent compared to May 2019.
       
    • Asia totaled 2.546 million passengers, up 21.6 percent over May 2023, but  down -22.5 percent compared to May 2019.
      • (Asian citizen arrivals to the U.S. were down -33.4 percent compared to May 2019, and U.S. citizen departures were up +5.5 percent.)
         
  • Top U.S. Ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 3.133 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 2.093 million, Miami (MIA) 2.083 million, San Francisco (SFO) 1.392 million, Newark (EWR) 1.385 million.
     
  • Top Foreign Ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.683 million, Toronto (YYZ) 1.113 million, Cancun (CUN) 1.039 million, Paris (CDG) 776,000, and Mexico City (MEX) 691,000.

The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
