January 2025 Total International Travel Volume to and from the United States
In January 2025, international visitor arrivals to the United States totaled 5,610,249, an increase of 4.7% from January 2024
Outbound travel departures from the United States by U.S. citizens totaled 7,622,381 in January 2025, an increase of 9.8% from January 2024
Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office show that in January 2025:
International Arrivals to the United States
- Total non-U.S. resident international visitor volume to the United States of 5,610,249 increased 4.7% compared to January 2024 to a level that was 96% of the pre-COVID total visitor volume reported for January 2019.
- Overseas visitor volume to the United States of 2,522,578 increased 5.4% from January 2024.
- The largest number of international visitor arrivals was from Mexico (1,677,399), Canada (1,410,272), the United Kingdom (235,115), China (198,537), and Brazil (191,646). Combined, these top 5 source markets accounted for 66.2% of total international arrivals.
- Of the top 20 tourist-generating countries to the United States, Canada (-8.1%), South Korea (-8.6%), Germany (-1.6%), France (-3.9%), the Netherlands (-4.6%), and Chile (-2.1%) reported a decrease in visitor volume in January 2025 compared to January 2024.
- The top 5 overseas tourism arrivals for January were the United Kingdom (174,351), Brazil (169,604), South Korea (123,043), China (109,234), and Japan (95,106).
- The top 5 overseas business arrivals for January were the United Kingdom (51,848), India (36,348), Japan (32,293), Germany (27,690), and South Korea (21,534).
- The top 5 overseas student arrivals for January were India (75,040), China (71,078), South Korea (15,167), Brazil (10,452), and the United Kingdom (8,916).
International Departures from the United States
- Total U.S. citizen international visitor departures from the United States of 7,622,381 increased 9.8% compared to January 2024 to a level that was 117.4% of total departures in pre-pandemic January 2019.
- The year-to-date (YTD) market share for North America (Mexico & Canada) was 53.8% and overseas was 46.2%.
- Mexico recorded the largest outbound visitor volume of 3,491,721 (45.8% of total departures for January). Canada recorded a year-over-year (YOY) increase of 19.9%.
- Combined YTD, Mexico (3,491,721) and the Caribbean (899,107) accounted for 57.6% of total U.S. citizen international visitor departures.
- Europe was the second largest market for outbound U.S. visitors with 927,637 departures, accounting for 12.2% of all departures in January. Outbound visitation to Europe in January 2025 increased 11.1% compared to January 2024.

I-92/APIS International Air Passengers
The ADIS/I-94 Visitor Arrivals Program, in cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), provides a count of visitor arrivals (Overseas+Canada+Mexico) to the United States (with stays of 1-night or more and visiting under certain visa types) and is used to calculate U.S. travel and tourism exports. The APIS/I-92 Program provides information on non-stop international air traffic between the United States and other countries. The data has been collected from the Department of Homeland Security - Customs and Border Protection’s Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) since July 2010. The APIS based “I-92” system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
